Scoring gothic horror at the table

Gothic horror is the fantasy mode that lives or dies on its score — dread does the emotional heavy lifting, and the music has to carry it. The trick is restraint: sparse strings, a low sustained tone, a single line of distant choir. Bring the music in before the players realise anything is wrong, and let the elegance do the unsettling. Save the sharp, dissonant swell for the moment the mask slips — the noble bares fangs, the portrait’s eyes follow, the door locks behind them.

For a vampire’s court or a haunted castle, lean into decayed grandeur: old wealth gone cold, mournful strings, choral menace. Loop one track per location rather than cutting between them; in horror, sameness is the threat, not variety. It’s a natural fit if you’re running a Ravenloft or Curse of Strahd campaign, but it works just as well for any dark-fantasy table.

Practical use at the table

Keep the volume low enough that a single swell registers when it matters. Pick a quiet, looping piece for travel and investigation, and hold your most dramatic cue in reserve for the confrontation. Everything below is hand-picked for exactly these moments.

01

What music works for a gothic horror campaign?

Lean on sparse, mournful strings and choral dread for castles and courts, thin wandering ambience for travel and investigation, and hold a sharp dissonant cue for the reveals. The set above is curated for exactly these beats — and works well for Ravenloft or Curse of Strahd tables too.
02

Is this gothic horror music royalty-free?

Yes — use it in campaigns, streams, actual play, videos, and podcasts per the license. Check the licensing page before publishing.
03
