Making of the Soundtrack | David Armsby’s “Hunted by Moonlight”

Collaborations Projects

When David Armsby sent me Hunted by Moonlight, I knew this one was different. It carried that peculiar mixture of beauty and terror that defines a dark fairy tale — where innocence meets the wild, and nature itself becomes both magical and monstrous. Beneath the story’s surface, I found something deeply human: a reflection on collaboration, on beings coming together to face the cruelty of nature — and, in a way, of life itself.

That theme became the heart of the music. After years of composing mostly alone, surrounded by virtual instruments, computers, and silence, I felt something calling me back to craft, to conversation, to the humanity that lives in shared creation. We live in a time when one person can do almost everything alone, and AI only deepens that solitude. But I’ve learned that art grows through many hands and many voices — from curiosity shared among fellow artists.

In the earliest days of the project, before a single note was written, I took long walks through the forest near my home, searching for the sound of this story. One evening, as darkness settled over the trees, I realized the cello would be its voice — the forest itself, whispering beauty and danger in equal measure. That’s when I called Daniel Chouinard, a wonderful cellist whose artistry shaped the entire score. His sensitivity, his understanding of sound, and his willingness to explore transformed the music from notation into living emotion.

From Bulgaria came Dorothy Takev, whose ethereal voice became the spirit of the forest. From Argentina, Matías Tozzola added a dark shimmer with his seven-string guitar. And from Brazil, Bruno Migliari anchored everything with his bass — the heartbeat of the soundtrack. Each of them brought their own world into the music. Every recording session was an act of discovery, a reminder that real collaboration breathes life into sound in ways no software ever could.

For me, this project was also a return to the guitar, my first true companion in music. I wrote many of the ideas on paper, away from the computer, with the guitar tuned like a cello in my hands. It felt like rediscovering what it means to create with wood, air, and vibration — immediate, imperfect, alive.

In times where it’s easy to isolate, I’ve come to see collaboration as a small act of resistance. Hunted by Moonlightbecame more than a film or a soundtrack — it became a celebration of craft, friendship, and the shared act of creation that keeps us human.

Watch the making-of video below, and I hope as you listen and see, you can feel that same pulse of humanity that moves through every note.
