The Story Behind the Music
This film marks the sixth collaboration between myself and David Armsby. This new film is being released on March 21, 2026, and represents a significant evolution in our creative partnership.
David describes the film as an unsettling and immersive journey through the alien world of early Cretaceous Australia. The music follows the same aesthetic, attempting to be equally unsettling and immersive. The film itself was challenging and tremendously inspiring to score, pushing me to explore textures and atmospheres that virtual instruments can uniquely capture.
While previous collaborations relied heavily on live performances, this particular album wasn’t done with live musicians. Instead, I focused on crafting a dense, synthetic soundscape that mirrors the alien environment without the use of real-time instrumentation, allowing for a specific sonic palette that feels both ancient and otherworldly.
The Sound of Prehistoric Tension
The score is designed to evoke the deep empathy for the prey and the terror of the dilophosaurus as a terrifying monster. It shifts between intimacy, tension, and melancholy, mirroring the film’s striking visuals and dark fairy-tale tone.
This project required a deep dive into the aesthetics I chose when David sent me the film: a distinct, Grimm Brothers-esque dark fairy tale where the animal is the victim and the monster is the antagonist. The result is an unsettling musical world that supports the narrative without overpowering it.
